Diane Nowak is a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician and Advanced Practice RD at the Cleveland Clinic. She specializes in nutrition support for adult critically ill post-operative patients and those requiring mechanical support. Diane has spent 28 years working with adults and geriatric patients in the ICU starting at Marymount Hospital. Diane joined the Cleveland Clinic in 2004, where she has focused on critical care nutrition since 2008. Diane is a super user of indirect calorimetry (IC) and has published data on adult mechanically ventilated cardiothoracic (CTS) patients comparing IC and the Penn State equations. She was also involved with an abstract published in Critical Care Medicine 2015 supplement, comparing weight-based equations with indirect calorimetry in ventilated CTS patients. She’s involved in teaching Dietetic Interns, Residents and Fellows. Most recently, Diane was involved with data for publication, the Use of Bedside Ultrasound to Assess Muscle Changes in the Critically Ill Surgical Patient in JPEN 2020. Diane co-authored the chapter Vitamin Deficiencies in Adult Malnutrition: Diagnosis and Treatment and associate editor of the Cleveland Clinic Nutrition Support Handbook 4th edition. Diane continues to work with IC and is developing a protocol to train dietitians to perform IC at the Cleveland Clinic.
