Professor School of Nursing

University of Minnesota

Dr. Fulkerson’s research focuses on family-based health promotion. She designs and conducts observational and clinical trial research and develops intervention programs for child and adolescent obesity and diabetes prevention, particularly through the home food environment and family meals. She has been funded as Principal Investigator to conduct randomized clinical trials in urban and rural communities by the National Institutes of Health for the past 14 years. These interventions aim to reduce childhood obesity by actively engaging the whole family in promoting healthful behaviors in the home, particularly by increasing the frequency and healthfulness of family meals and reducing screen-time. She has also been a Co-Investigator on multiple federally funded studies on obesity. She has experience working closely with community advisory groups, conducting focus groups in the community to tailor intervention development, delivering health promotion programming in communities, and she serves as the Director of the Center for Child & Family Health Promotion Research. She has presented her research at local, regional, national, and international conferences for over 20 years.
