Chef Kevin Mitchell is a culinary educator, historian, author, and scholar of historical foodways of the American South, working preserve southern ingredients and champion the historical significance of African Americans in the culinary arts. He co-authored the recent book Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods, Recipes, and Their Stories. In 2008, Chef Mitchell became the first African American Chef Instructor at the Culinary Institute of Charleston. He is also an instructor at his alma mater, The Culinary Institute of America. He has a masters degree from the University of Mississippi, where his thesis was titled, From Black Hands to White Mouths: Charlestons Freed and Enslaved Cooks and their Influence on the Food of the South. Chef Mitchell sits on numerous boards and advisory committees including Slow Food, the Southern Foodways Alliance, and The Carolina Gold Rice Foundation.
