Melissa Chlupach is a life-long Alaskan and an Assistant Professor in Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of Alaska Anchorage, specializing in Alaska Native nutrition. Prior to working at UAA, she worked for NANA Management Services, serving as the Regional Healthcare Dietitian. Melissa received the Alaska Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AKAND) 2016 Emerging Dietetic Leader and 2017 Outstanding Dietitian of the Year awards. She served as the AKAND President and currently serves on the Alaska Food Policy Council Board. Melissas most rewarding project is the Alaska traditional foods initiative and movement, in which she worked with many organizations, such as the USDA. She collaborated with the Alaska Native Medical Center, Maniilaq Health Center, Utuqqanaat Inaat long-term care facility, SEARHC Mt Edgecumbe Hospital, San Carlos Healthcare Corporation and Gila River Health Care to implement a traditional foods donation program at these facilities. She also worked on the development of Maniilaqs traditional foods processing facility, the Siauq, and reviewed their nutrient analysis for ringed seal oil, which is now offered to the Utuqqanaat Inaat elders. Melissas goal is to bring people together to share best practices so we can learn from each other, promoting health and wellness throughout our communities.
