The rise in complex emergencies has resulted in increased international humanitarian assistance as a critical lifesaving and life-sustaining resource for people affected by crises and disasters globally. Contributions from governments and European institutions amounted to $22.6 billion in 2018, and over 210,00 humanitarian workers were employed to meet the needs of affected populations. This session will present a comprehensive assessment of the evolving food and nutrition landscape in the face of global disaster and humanitarian relief in diverse social, cultural, political, and economic crises. It will address complexities within the humanitarian programming to foster impact within the context of crisis, geography, and the changing dynamics of demography and patterns of health and disease. Lessons learned from two of the biggest global humanitarian crises in Syria and Venezuela will be shared to highlight the critical role RDNs play in supporting humanitarian and relief efforts. It will debate how crises and disasters are transforming the way we practice nutrition and dietetics and the skills and experience RDNs will need to meet the evolving expectations of a crisis-driven world.

Learning Objectives:

  • Critically review current evidence on what works and provide recommendations for action that affect role of RDNs in global food and nutrition disaster and humanitarian relief
  • Debate the value and limitations of current food and nutrition-driven interventions on influencing population health outcomes, including effective aid planning
  • Analyze cultural, political and environmental gaps in global food and nutrition capacity, research and practice and inspire action from lessons learned from Syria and Venezuela
