School gardens have been widely researched and shown to promote increased nutrition and academic performance in children. But what about schools in northern climates, or schools where land is not available to set up and grow gardens? Classroom hydroponics is the answer. A simple system is economical, versatile, and low maintenance, yet it provides the great benefits of including gardening in the curriculum. This session will not only discuss the benefits of classroom hydroponic gardens, it will equip the attendees with the knowledge to start their own hydroponic system.

Learning Objectives:

  • List benefits and challenges associated with utilizing school gardens.
  • Describe how hydroponic gardens can help overcome some of those challenges, and the benefits it provides to children and schools.
  • Demonstrate the building of a hydroponic system, from seed to harvest.
