Review of Glucose Time-in-Target Range and the Newest Nutrition Interventions to Increase
Achieving target blood glucose values in many people with diabetes remains a challenge. Attendees will learn what glucose time-in-range (TIR) is and how it goes beyond A1c in capturing the highs, lows, and in-range glucose values that characterize life with diabetes. Presenters will also review the newest and surprising studies on key nutrition interventions that improve glucose variability, leading to improved frequency of TIR; for example, studies show that eating non-starchy vegetables before the meal improves glucose TIR, and that post-meal blood glucose peak is higher and earlier with white rice compared to pasta. In total, 12 of the newest nutrition interventions proven to increase glucose TIR will be presented. Presenters will also review sequential “Steps of Glucose P.A.T.T.E.R.N. Management,” as the order of applying these steps makes a difference in achieving desired outcomes.
- Define what time-in-range is relative to blood glucose targets and why it goes beyond HbA1c in the control of blood glucose.
- Describe the effect of high fat, high protein, and high soluble fiber meals on post-meal blood glucose (time above and time below range).
- Describe the effect of the timing of consumption of select meal components on post-meal blood glucose (notably non-starchy vegetables).
- 10.2.11 Monitors, identifies and adjusts the intervention based on patient progress in meeting established goals.
