Ultimate MNT Impact: Understanding Statistical Significance vs. Clinical Significance
Description
This lecture-discussion session will focus on the clinical impact of data derived from medical nutrition therapy research. Even though a study may show statistical significance, does the intervention truly benefit people in reducing symptoms or risk of disease? Effect size and clinical significance – concepts related to intervention impact – must be considered in medical nutrition therapy studies. Participants will interpret study outcomes using the concepts of statistical significance, effect size and clinical significance to determine practice. Those conducting MNT research will report more clinical significance parameters when publishing results.
Learning Objectives:
- Define statistical significance, effect size, and clinical significance related to MNT research
- Explain the use of a variety of parameters in addition to statistical significance in interpreting the true impact of study results
- Interpret results given the relevant parameters
