Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the United States, affecting over 5% of the adult population. Patients with COPD suffer high morbidity, poor quality of life, activity limitation and exacerbations. Diet and nutrition are associated with the decline in lung function that is the hallmark of COPD, as well as other co-morbidities that contribute to disease burden. However, the impact of medical nutrition therapy and specific nutrition-related intervention on outcomes in COPD are not well described. In this session, results of the Academy’s 2019 Evidence Analysis Library COPD Systematic Review and updated Guideline will be presented. Guideline topics include medical nutrition therapy, methods to estimate energy needs, energy and macronutrients, vitamin D and body composition. Attendees will learn how to apply the most recent evidence-based nutrition practice recommendations to promote positive outcomes in their patients with COPD.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate the current state of evidence for nutrition therapy and its effect on clinical outcomes.
  • Describe updates to the Academy’s evidence-based nutrition practice guideline for patients with COPD.
  • Implement evidence-based nutrition practice recommendations to improve outcomes in patients with COPD.

Learning Need Codes:

  • 5330 Pulmonary diseases (disease/disorder)
  • 3020 Assessment of target groups, populations
  • 9020 Evaluation and application of research
