411. The Critical Role of Research in Master’s and Dietetic Internship Programs

Research is a required standard for dietetic internships (DI) and a critical component of most Master’s degree (MS) programs. However, there is wide variation in implementation, and many program directors are unsure how to meet this standard in a meaningful way within the constraints of program time and faculty/preceptor resources. This session will describe strategies for research projects used by two Masters programs in Nutrition. The Case Western Reserve University Combined Dietetic Internship/Master’s Degree Program uses a standard research project that all students implement together and then follows up with development of unique student proposals. The University of Alaska Anchorage MS program serves both RDNs returning for their degree and students in an MS/DI track and has options for a graduate project or thesis. Session attendees will leave with new ideas about how to implement the research standard in their MS and/or DI program.

  • Detail an approach to incorporating research into a Master’s program utilizing a range of research methodologies in a graduate project format.
