226. Feasting and Fasting: Nutritional Guidance During Religious Observances

For many religions there is no separation of food from faith. In fact, food is often a major building block in the religion’s foundation. In this session, participants will hear an explanation of key fasts and feasts of the world’s major religions and will learn how to counsel patients during these religious periods.
The Academy’s strategic plan includes a 2025 Impact Goal to elevate the role of nutrition status in quality health care throughout the lifecycle. Patients who participate in these religious events have made lifelong commitments originating in their youth;RDNs and NDTRs must be ready to address any challenges! Learn how to provide appropriate nutritional interventions that are culturally sensitive yet practical for your facility. Also learn how to document and monitor their nutritional status according to the Nutrition Care Process.

Learning Objectives:

  • Interpret the interplay between interfaith perspectives and food cultures on fasting and feasting in three religious traditions.
  • Identify the health and nutrition benefits, risks, limitations, and implications of counseling patients of diverse religious faiths.
  • Address fasting and feasting concerns effectively when using the Nutrition Care process in diverse practice settings.
